About Our Homeschool Journey

I've always loved education. When I originally entered college I had planned on becoming a
schoolteacher. However I was already disenchanted with both the public and private school
systems that I had seen, and so instead majored in English and History. I'd known about
homeschooling since I was young, as some of the members of our church became
interested in it when many private Christian schools lost their tax-exempt status.

I don't remember why I picked up the book. It was a slim green volume, and reading it, I
became immediately hooked. We started our homeschool journey in the late summer of
2001, when our first son was all of 6 weeks old. I really wanted to homeschool, and my
husband was receptive to talking about it...but not quite sure. One day he came home
angered because of something that had happened in the public school (I don't even
remember what anymore) and that was it. We had committed to  homeschooling.

I probably overdid things the first few years (all those poor first children that are
experimented on!), but I'm still using resources I collected at that time.  Now that our first
son has actually reached school age I am confronted with putting together a curriculum that
is well-rounded, academic, Godly, and Orthodox. It is not an easy task, especially as the
Orthodox homeschooling community is so small.

Many other Christian groups have a great lead on us...there are many Protestant and
Catholic curriculums available. Currently I use a combination of Catholic and Protestant
curriculum.

I would love for their to be a classical curriculum based on Orthodoxy out there (please tell
me someone is creating one!). In the meantime we must do our best to use the resources
that are out there, whether they be secular, Protestant, Catholic, or Orthodox.

As I start planning for next year (which begins July 1 2008 for us) I am contemplating what to
use as a history base for my soon-to-be first grader. Right now I am looking at WTM, My
Father's World, Mystery of History and Sonlight. I will probably end up creating my own...
